I battled with the Raspberry Pi for about 4 hours only to discover - after ordering some new components a few days later - that the power supply was giving me issues! Such is life in technical times. Anyhow, we've now got both of my two Pis communicating with one of the scanners we may be using, an HP (it will definitely work with our other HP, and most likely the Canon we may try, according to the specs I found online).
I'm running the default (and latest, v 1.3 as of this posting) Raspbian GUI Operating System downloaded from http://www.raspberrypi.org, and after setting everything else up I more or less followed the instructions on this site <http://johannesnews.blogspot.com/2013/02/scan-to-email-with-only-one-buttonpress.html> to download and install SANE, (Scanner Access Now Easy) imagemagick (for file conversions as needed) and scanbuttond (to get input from the buttons on the scanner). I've not yet tried the main script on the site (will be using my own variation of it), and have to also find a solution for the scanimage app to run without crashing on startup, per his note that says to manually call it (which will not be possible in our rig).
BUT... that's for tomorrow. Today, we have communication between the scanner and the Pi!
